Truth. We LOVE farmers’ markets! This is not based on the fact that we vend, it’s based on the fact that there is no better way to shop for food. If we had a magic wand, we’d get rid of the grocery stores, build up the farmers’ markets and everyone would support local and regional food. Farmers’ markets give you the chance to meet the maker, ask questions and often, taste before purchasing.
OK, no magic wand, so that’s where this post comes in (which will be a series as we vend and explore, stay tuned)…
The beauty of a farmers’ market is that you never know what you’re going to find. Sure, there is always fresh and fabulous fruits and veggies, meats and cheeses, and usually baked goods for days but sometimes you’ll find a farm with some specialty items – like an abundance of Asian greens or fresh eucalyptus.
We’ve had the pleasure of vending at the Down to Earth Farmers’ Market in Park Slope (Brooklyn) twice. Here’s some market highlights…
Fresh cranberries from Jersey Farm Produce just in time for Thanksgiving! Yes, please! I scooped up a pound 🙂
Incredible eucalyptus too! Fresh and fragrant (ours is now drying and is looking great in the kitchen (Jersey Farm Produce).
Drink More Good of Beacon, NY, hand-crafts syrups and mixers. Simply, add seltzer and ice and you have yourself a much healthier “soda”. I tried the ginger ale (which is made with real organic ginger) it was great!Van Brunt Stillhouse was on hand with artisan crafted bourbon whiskey – made in Brooklyn from 65% organic NY state corn. We’re not drinkers, so I can’t attest to whether or not it’s good. You’ll just have to try it yourself 😉
Butterstein’s maple kettle corn – the perfect balance of salty and sweet. Simply the best we’ve ever had! Non-GMO organic corn from Jersey, maple and butter from upstate, sea salt from Maine. Simple ingredients, great flavor, really nice owner – made on a tricycle popcorn cart. Very cool, go check it out!
Indian simmer sauces from Calcutta Kitchens are great meal helpers – coconut and coriander is on my “must try list”.
Icy treats from Go-Go Pops – the kids were having a field day with these.
Japanese salad dressing and sauces from MOMO Dressing – great flavor, made in BK!
So check out the market, comment and let us know your favorites! NCK will be in Park Slope Sundays, November 22 and December 6, 13 & 20, 2015.
